Freescale Cares
We welcomed Freescale Semiconductor employees today for United Way’s Day of Caring.
What is Day of Caring? Volunteers give a few hours in one day at various organizations throughout the city, and the collective impact is tremendous.
Homes are built, hungry people are fed, children are mentored, trails and parks are restored, the elderly are remembered and schools receive much- needed help.
Shona Thomson with Freescale says she enjoys volunteering and is thankful to do so at the Food Bank. “We like the Food Bank and want to give back to our community. We have new employees, and thought this was a great place to do a team building exercize,” said Shona.
Thanks, Freescale, for your time and support!

CAFB is beautiful inside and out.
Eagle Scout volunteer, Jeff Mitchell (in grey sweatshirt), worked with his troop to organize and raise $250 for their CAFB beautifcation project.
We now have four new picnic tables on our grounds! They also raked leaves, trimmed trees and renovated Katie Klauke’s memorial area outside the volunteer resources lobby.

Thank you for your generosity, volunteers! Like what you see? Sign up for other volunteer opportunities here.

Volunteer Spotlight: Ruth Kaplan
Ruth Kaplan volunteers several hours a week in Product Recovery, where the bulk of food donations are sorted, weighed and processed into the warehouse.
Last week, at our annual “Hunger Heroes” appreciation luncheon, she spoke.
“Today, you gave me a gift. One that means more to me than anything I ever bought, found or been given in a long time. You gave me the gift of hope, the gift of empowerment and the gift of inclusion.
For me, this luncheon is an incredible experience of community, belonging and believing; one that I have not had in many years. Believing that I could do something positive, be a part of something positive and belong to this community of people making a positive difference in the world.
And the price you ask is so small – a few hours a week. I just wanted to thank you, and to let you know how much it means to me to be part of the Capital Area Food Bank.”

“Appetizers with Addie” Knows How to Put Food Away
Thursday night, Addie Broyles, food writer for the Statesman and social media maven, hosted her monthly “Appetizers with Addie” and invited friends (virtual and otherwise) to volunteer in Product Recovery, packing boxes for Hurricane Ike evacuees in Houston.
She was so kind and generous with her time. After a quick instruction, she and her group jumped in and started packing.
Product Recovery volunteers are welcome Thursday nights from 4-9 p.m. This is a unique opportunity to support the community, meet some cool folks and work with The X Man (Xavier Perez, Product Recovery Manager).
