News Story: Food Banks Feel Pinch of Rising Fuel Costs

July 25, 2008 § Leave a comment

Otis Jackson from the Bastrop Food Pantry says, “We have a waiting list for people to get on to receive food on a regular basis.” For the 200 Bastrop families this pantry helps support with much needed food, it’s simply not enough. Each trip he, and other Food Pantry volunteers and staff make to our warehouse cuts deeper and deeper into their funds.

We’re doing what we can to help ease the pinch on our Agencies. For Partner Agencies in rural counties, our Regional Delivery Program delivers food to centrally located drop sites to the outlying areas of our 21-county service area. We’ve also added a new program, The Wheels of Sharing Mobile Food Pantry, to support areas with insufficient food pantry services. With the tough economic times, we’ve stepped up mobile pantry distributions from two to approximately six times a week.
