Senator Cornyn tours the Food Bank

August 11, 2008 § Leave a comment

U.S. Senator, John Cornyn toured the Food Bank this morning to learn more about the challenges in providing emergency food assistance to Central Texas families. He also met with CAFB Partner Agencies to learn about their specific struggles with increased food prices, and a decrease in volunteers due to rising fuel prices.

After the tour, the Senator led a press conference where he announced his co-sponsorship of the Charitable Mileage Deduction Equity Act (S. 3421). This bill will reduce the burden on volunteers by increasing the allowable reimbursement rate per mile to a rate more in line with the current cost of fuel – from 14 cents to 58.5 cents per mile.

With the Senator’s past support of the Farm Bill, and this new legislation to encourage volunteering, every little bit helps.

Thank you, Senator Cornyn, for your support.
