Pillow Elementary – Learning Through Giving

Carrie shares the story of the awareness and participation at the recent Pillow Elementary Food Drive:

Michelle Langenbach says she enjoys volunteering with co-workers at annual Food Bank events, and feels passionate about the organization’s mission.

A few days after Hurricane Ike forced Gulf Coast residents to seek refuge in Austin, Michelle heard some alarming news: “One morning, driving to work, I heard on the radio that Capital Area Food Bank supplies for Ike evacuees had run out. That caught me off guard,” she said.

pillow-elementary-010Instead of rallying her co-workers to volunteer, she decided the situation created an opportune moment to teach her nine-year-old daughter, Cassandra, about the importance of helping others and giving back to her community.

“When I started this drive, my intention was to make sure we could help the Food Bank. But I also wanted the kids at the school to understand how important it is to care for their community. I really want my daughter to realize how fortunate she is. There are children and families out there who are seriously lacking in everything, food being the most basic of all.”
