Weathering the Perfect Storm with Pride

Things are moving really fast at the Food Bank. In fact, I’m proud to share with you that we just had our biggest distribution in the 29 year history of the Food Bank this past month – 2.7 million pounds. And, for three of the last nine months, we’ve had record breaking distributions. This is even bigger than our disaster relief outreach for hurricanes Katrina and Rita, or Hurricane Ike!
Why am I so excited?
Because while food is flying off the shelves quicker than we can stock them, it also means that families with children, older adults, and other members of our community are taking advantage of this vital service we offer. Our neighbors in need are less anxious about how they’ll nourish themselves, won’t have to choose between food and medical expenses, and can buy their children those much-needed back to school supplies so they can thrive in school.
Our perfect storm – two federally funded feeding programs within the same months, coupled with record distribution and need – is also a perfect opportunity for a well-nourished community. So, if you stop by to volunteer, drop off a donation, or just visit to see how we work, please know that our seemingly empty shelves are just part of our world: a world where inventory management is precise, well-managed and award winning (our operations staff just won Feeding America awards for Best On Time Pick Up, Best On Time Receipts, and Legendary Customer Service). To get you started, take a virtual tour, and see how we do Food Banking.
Thank you for helping us do what we do best.
