A wonderful holiday gift came early for our country’s hungry children.

This afternoon, Congress passed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The bill will be signed into law by the President, representing a gift to millions of children who struggle against hunger every day.
If a low-income child were to ‘unwrap’ this gift, she would find:
- She can access free meals in her high-poverty neighborhood, and her parents and school will not have to jump through unnecessary hoops to help her.
- She would find more Summer Meals and Breakfast sites to nourish her and her friends when school is out of session.
- The at-risk afterschool program in which she participates will be reimbursed for a meal, not just a snack, further protecting her from hunger.
- Her friends in foster care will automatically qualify for free meals without having to demonstrate their income when applying for meal benefits.
She’ll find many other innovative improvements in federal child nutrition programs to support her health, help her learn, and help her tread a path of achievement throughout her life.
Passage of this bill is a momentous victory for countless advocates, concerned citizens, and families throughout Texas and the country who raised their voices on behalf of hungry children. Our collective efforts to work with our members of Congress compelled our leaders to do the right thing.
This is a gift to our children.
