Are ya hankerin’ for a HAM-up?

August 12, 2008

We know you’re passionate about two things as much as we are – the online community and ending hunger. How can we take that passion into something both fun and meaningful?

We talked (yes, in person!) to some of the great minds on Twitter, and the HAM-up Tweet-up was born.

September is Hunger Action Month

Get it? HAM… September is Hunger Action Month … Hamming it up… Clever huh?

September is Hunger Action Month

Then the ideas really started flying.

How about a competition for donating ham and other protein products?

How about a can-struction competition?

How about we ask people to donate their weight in food?

How about we ask people to donate the cost of meals for the day to the Food Bank?

How about we ask the community to volunteer at some Food Bank partner agencies on a specific day?

As the ideas and the excitement grew, we realized that this day of hunger-ending-awesome-ness shouldn’t be just contained by a couple of folks gathered around a computer. As much as this day is about the 40,000 hungry Central Texans relying on the Food Bank each week, it’s also about you.

So mark in your calendars Saturday, September 13 for the HAM-up Tweet-up. It’s not a particularly meaningful day in Austin or hunger history, but there’s no major home football game that day, and we guess you’ll probably be looking for something cool to do.

Send us your ideas for our first inaugural HAM-up Tweet-up!

Have a competition to see what individual and/or organization can get the most grams of protein donated. Silly prize to ensue.

This is a great idea. I think we should get everyone from the Social Media Club Austin, 501 Tech, Austin Interactive Marketing Assoc., Austin Marketing Association, Austin Technology Council, GeekAustin, RefreshAustin, Door64, of course Every Dot Connects, and anyone who cares a bit about hunger involved. Great post, Lisa.

How about a bake-off of some sort, where the entry “fee” is a certain number of pounds or cans of donated food? My chocolate chip cookies would take the cake… so to speak!

Adding this to the GoodCause Austin blog!
How about have eco bags made with HAM logo and have people fill them up with food?
I also like the no-eat picnic idea, where you can set up picnic tables, coolers, grills, volleyball net, pinata, etc – but no one eats because food is being donated.
Other themes could be back-to-school (bread, PBJ, fruit, juice boxes, raisins, etc.), breakfast (pancake mixes, syrup, cereal, bacon, ham, bread, etc), or Tex-Mex (rice, beans, tortilla shells).
I’m sure you’ve thought of these!

I’d missed the boat on this announcement, and unfortunately have a conflicting event that afternoon.

Is there availability in the 9/13 AM Product Recovery time slot for folks?

Friendly reminder to fellow Twitter folks from my CAFB experience:
no cell phone use allowed in warehouse or Recovery room, twittering should be limited to lobby/break room.
